Just because it’s August, that doesn’t mean summer is over! There’s still time to make the most of summer–and we’re here to help.
Here are a few ideas to check off the summer bucket list before it’s too late!
Host a dinner party or BBQ
It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, but there is certainly something fun about inviting the people you love over to enjoy a meal together. If you don’t feel like spending the time or money preparing appetizers or desserts, ask your guest to each come with a dish.
This not only takes the burden off your shoulders, but you’ll get to try something you wouldn’t have thought to make. If you’re lucky, your guests might just share their secret recipes with you as well!
Whether it’s a sit down dinner with your family or a BBQ with the neighbors, inviting your loved ones into your home is always something celebrate!
Get to the Ocean (or any large body of water)
Here at Smiley HQ, we’re lucky enough to be close to the Atlantic Ocean. But if you don’t live near an ocean, that doesn’t mean you have to be stuck by the inflatable pool! Hop online or ask around to find the closest beach, pond or lake that you can visit with your family or friends for some fun swimming to beat that August heat! Pack a picnic in the morning with sandwiches and snacks and you can have a super summer day.
Let the kids pick the activity for the day!
Give each child in your family the chance to pick an activity they have always wanted to do! Whether it’s tagging along on a date night, going on a pool trip, or having a playground adventure, let the kid be in charge of making the decisions for a day and just go with the flow. This will not only show the child in your life that you respect their ideas, but that you want to spend as much time with them as possible before school starts!
See live music
A key summer staple is to see some live music. Now this doesn’t mean you have to go to see a huge headliner and spend a bunch of money on tickets, it just means keep an eye on your local paper and neighborhood flyers, or Google “free live music” to find out if there are any fun bands playing in town parks or at local restaurants.
You and your partner can make a date night out of it, or a group of friends can have a fun outing that’s different from your norm—and don’t be afraid to try some new type of music. You never know–you may discover your new favorite band!
Now this is a summer essential that doesn’t require much work—it doesn’t matter how old you are, a s’more is a s’more! While it’s still light out, set up a bonfire and some chairs (check to see where the wind is blowing so you don’t get smoke in your face). Gather firewood to keep nearby and some old newspaper to get the fire going.
Have the kids find marshmallow roasting sticks or buy skewers at the shop. Then, set up a little tray with marshmallows, chocolate bars, graham crackers, and a lantern or flashlight that can be easily passed around. What’s next? It’s time to make some tasty summer memories!
